Boligen ligger høyt i en sørvendt skråning i Vestby med glimrende utsikt gjennom eksisterende trær til Brevikbukta nedenfor og til jordbruksareal i øst. Tomta er smal og ligger mellom en eksisterende bolig i vest og adkomstveien i øst. Stedet er karakterisert av fjell i dagen og lav skogsvegetasjon. Det blei satt som en forutsetning tidlig i designprosessen å minimalisere behov for sprengning.

Huset er fundamentert direkte oppe på fjellet, og utformingen tar utgangspunkt i ideen om å skape enkle bokser i tre som følger skråningen ned med terrasser på takene. Fasadene mot vest og nord er relativt lukket for å bevare nabotomtens privatliv, mens huset åpner seg mot landskapet i sør og øst. Rommene er lagt på tre forskjellige nivåer. I første etasje danner inngangsrommet en forbindelse mellom stua som er orientert mot utsikten til bukta i sør og kjøkkenet som ligger i forbindelse med en opphøyd hageterrasse i øst. Soverom og et drivhus er plassert mot nord, og under stua er en garasje i en underetasje. I andre etasje er hovedsoverommet med garderobe og bad og en loftstue som kan åpnes opp mot en stor, sørvendt takterrasse med planter. I små sprang mellom husets hovedvolumer dannes det oppholdsarealer med ulike kvaliteter. Høye vinduer gjør at naturlig lys og utsikt til hageplanter karakteriserer de indre rommene. Øst for huset blir et sammenhengende hagerom tilrettelagt langs med hele husets lengde på skulpturelle, bevokste terrasser.

Huset er bygd med en enkel trekonstruksjon og limtre over større vindusåpninger. Alle innvendige overflater består av forskjellige sorter ubehandlet tre, og det brukes kun materialer uten skadelige overflatebehandlinger. På taket er solfangere som dekker halvparten av det årlige oppvarmingsbehovet til varmtvann.

The house lies high on a south-facing slope in Vestby with a brilliant view through existing trees to Brevikbukta below and agricultural land to the east. The site is narrow and lies between an existing house to the west and the access road to the east. The place is characterised by exposed bedrock and low forest vegetation. Early in the design process it became a precondition to minimise the need for interventions into the existing terrain.

The house is established directly upon the bedrock, and the design was conceived with the image of creating simple wooden boxes with terraces on the rooftops which follow the slope down. The facades to the west and north are relatively closed to preserve the neighbour’s privacy, while the house opens itself up to the landscape to the south and east. The rooms are laid on three different levels. On the first level, an entrance room creates a connection between the living room oriented towards the view to the bay in the south and the kitchen which lies in connection with a raised garden terrace to the east. Bedrooms and a greenhouse are placed to the north, and under the living room is a garage. The main bedroom is on the second level together with a loft living room which can be opened up onto a large, south-facing roof terrace with plants. Living areas with unique qualities are created in the small gaps between the house’s main volumes. High windows allow natural light and views to garden plants to characterise the inner spaces. To the east, a continuous garden space is established along with the entire length of the house on sculptural, planted terraces.

The house is built with a simple timber structure and glue-laminated timber over larger window openings. All internal surfaces consist of different types of untreated wood, and only materials without harmful surface treatments are used. On the roof are solar collectors which cover half of the yearly requirement for water heating.
